5 Things You Do Not Know About Bread

Bread has been a staple of the human diet for centuries and has come a long way from the early breads cooked in flames to the breads cooked in the fireplace to the breads cooked in home ovens. But do we really know what nutrients are found in the bread we eat? Bread contains vitamin B, carbohydrates and protein, all of which are important in keeping us healthy. How did it all come about?

1. Early man grew wheat crops, and when the wheat was grown, it was pulverized and wet down. This wet down wheat was then place on a stone and cooked (the first flatbread).

2. Ancient Egyptians added yeast, which they cultivated, to the wet down wheat and cooked this concoction in a pan. Thus, making the first yeast dough.

3. Early Romans decided that this was a healthful food and began to add things to the pulverized wheat and yeast and built ovens in which to bake this early yeast bread.

4. Eventually, bread was baked in bakeries and became available to almost everyone. These individual bakeries were eventually sold to large baking companies that would bake various types of breads, and could supply them to the consumer in large quantities cheaply. Although the bread was available cheaply, it was made to suit the tastes of the consumer.

5. During the latter times, women (housewives) baked bread at home using an age old method that was time consuming. The modern day housewife does not have the time to bake home made bread the old way, and this gave rise to the bread machine. Today, we can buy bread, or make it easily at home using a modern day bread machine that will not just bake the bread, but it will bake the bread when you want it and keep it warm until you are ready to serve it.

Bread is certainly a staple food and it is nutritious and healthy in spite of the comments of many people, especially those that tout the modern diet plans. You can have bread as toast in the morning, a sandwich at lunch time and as a dinner roll with dinner. There is a variety of bread you can buy or make: white, rye, wheat, whole grain, French, croissants, French toast, dinner rolls and more. Bread can be made part of a meal or eaten with the meal. Bread has always been there and will continue to be a staple of our diets. Make bread a nutritious and healthy part of your diet and do not give up bread simply because someone says it is not good for you. Remember, bread contains protein, vitamin B and carbohydrates, all nutrients our bodies need.
