Bread Flour - How to Use It

You've decided to take up the challenge to bake your own bread! Congratulations on the decision. Now you ask yourself what flour do I use? There are so many different kinds of flour on the market what do I choose from? In order to make that delicious bread that we all love from the bakeries or restaurants you need to use bread flour, not the all purpose flour that we all have in our kitchens. Bread flour is very basic. It does not have all the ingredients that regular, all purpose flour has.

If you have a problem with gluten intake then this is definitely not the flour for you! Bread flour has a high level of gluten. Gluten is what gives the bread its texture and form which we like. Bread flour is not all bad though, it does have the added ingredients of barley, vitamin C, and potassium bromate which are not found in your regular flour, hence the difference in the quality of baked breads.

If you are thinking of making your own pizza then bread dough is the way to go. It will definitely enhance the taste and quality of your dough. You may have to be careful though the family may not allow you to order in pizza after they taste your delicious base!

However, as good as this all sounds, you don't want to put bread flour into all of your recipes. It does not work well in desserts. Cookies and cakes are badly affected by this flour as they tend to turn into tough and chewy instead of light and fluffy.

Bread flour is not hard to come by. You should be able to find it in any of your local grocery stores. It comes in various quantities and has a long shelf life. A good idea is to always store your flour in the freezer, that way it stays fresh and those little, annoying insects don't get inside!
