Fake GHD Straighteners - Are You One of the 1000's Who Have Been Conned?

GHD, a name synonymous over the years with trust, style, quality & reliability. All this has been put under threat by the invasion of fake GHD hair straighteners popping up everywhere. If you have been involved in GHD retail and GHD repairs yourself you would have seen plenty of evidence of this. Increasingly however, more and more of these fake GHD's are arriving from China, they look like the real deal but come with a sting in the tail.

If you have bought or received a GHD styler as a gift in the last couple of years you need to read this. When I carry out a GHD repair you can do a few checks on the irons to make sure they are the real deal. To do these checks get out your GHD's and follow the GHD fake checker test.

How to Spot a Fake GHD Guide

a.) Check the sticker opposite the on/off switch. This should have a model number on it (eg. MK4.1b), now the letter in the model number stands for the colour of the GHD straighteners. 'b' stands for black, 'p' stands for pink etc. Now, when the 'made in China' fake GHDs were manufactured they made the same sticker for the black ones as the pink, so if your iron is pink but has a MK4.1b model number this would indicate it is fake.

b.) Now all recent GHD's have a serial number on the silver sticker opposite the on/off switch. You can register this number on the official GHD website. This should tell you if your GHD is a genuine one, however if your GHD is a bit older it may not be still cataloged by GHD and may not show up so this is for newer GHDs really.

c.) Think, where did I buy these from? Did I pay full market price about £100? If you bought these irons recently brand new for under £75 then the chances are these could be fake. There are only a handful of official online outlets, these are the big professional stores that sell other beauty products. you would not find genuine brand new GHD's at a car boot sale or market so forget it if you think these might be real.

d.) GHD Repairs are easy for professionals they see a lot of irons but there are some simple checks we can all do. First of all check behind the hinge covers, this is the area behind the 2 logos and the sides of the irons. Before doing a GHD repair you can pop these off with a small screwdriver. Under there is a hinge pin or screw. Now, this pin should have a cross-head (Phillips head) screw at both sides of the pin. If the pin only has one screw and a stopper at the other side, this is a fake.

e.) Recently to the market there are a lot of fake purple GHD straighteners, these are the new mk4 IV style ones. The fakes tend to have a purple plug, the real ones have a black one. The fake ones are also over heavily (crudely) patterned. Another common copy is the MK4 IV hot pink styler.

f.) Now most of you want open a GHD up and attempt your own GHD repair but if you did you would also see that all the internal circuit boards on a fake GHD have soldered points, the real ones have mainly screw fixings.

If you find out your GHD is fake, what should you do? Please don't send them to a GHD or a GHD repair company, as if they are not real, you could be charged with the return of them. All the internal parts of the fakes are cheaply put together and are very likely to break again even if you get them repaired. Most GHD repair companies will not look at them because if they fix them and then the irons cause damage or explode those companies take on the liability for the damage. I am sorry to say but the only place for the fakes is the bin. It is an expensive lesson, but better that then holding a potential lethal weapon to your head.

Best bet is to get your old set of genuine GHD's fixed. If you have an older pair of straighteners in your house somewhere that have stopped working, well don't fear there are also may GHD repairs companies that will offer a repair service for your old GHD and have them fixed as good as new, these can be found by doing an internet search.
