When my family first purchased a bread maker, you could go and get a 20kg bag of bread mix for only a few dollars. Over the years the price has gone up, and the size of the bag that you can buy the mix in has gone down. This means that you lose the advantage of saving money because you have bought the product in bulk. In saying this, there are still a few places where you can buy cheap bread ingredients, if you know where to look. Often the best way of doing this is to buy the ingredients individually, and mix it all up. You can still buy flour, grains and yeast in bulk so this isn't really an issue.
Alternatively, look for the bread mix that you are used to using, and go to a wholesale store, or ask to see if they sell it in big bags. A 20kg bag will last you for a long time, and you save a lot of money because it was purchased in bulk. You need to be seriously careful what bread mix you use though, because some of it simply doesn't work. As I have mentioned in some of my other articles, trial and error tends to be a big part of baking bread. We found that every time we changed the bread mix or yeast we had to alter the amount of each ingredient that was being put in.
Bread Machines
Sometimes we would cook 4 or 5 loaves of bread unsuccessfully, but eventually we would work it out, write it down and keep that recipe around. I would suggest that buying in bulk is the best way to get cheap ingredients, but make sure that you aren't compromising on quality. Yeast in particular is probably the most important ingredients for bread, and you want to get something that is high quality. There truly is nothing worse than eating bread which feels like a brick!
